We all order food online and then one delivery boy come to your home and delivered you the food. But what if this delivery boy is robot? Don’t be afraid this is not Si-Fi story.
This great startup founded by Felipe Chavez in Bogota, back in 2015, and operative at UC Berkeley’s campus, California, starting January 2017, as part of the University's LUNCH program. But firstly they started work in small area and now they are going to expand. Kiwi is an app that allows people to order food on demand, with one small difference — instead of humans, people will have robots coming to their front door. Ch├ívez said he thought of the idea when he ordered a pizza online and the delivery fee cost almost as much as the actual pizza. But this allow kiwi to lower cost by decreasing delivery fees by as much as 80 percent.

They have three robots, one inside the restaurant, a semi-autonomous tricycle that goes in the streets and have the last-mile robots. They have robots deployed in the city, and then, with the trikes, they can pick up dozens of meals at once and then load the robots. The robot now contain a display with changing eye features (instead of the mustachioed sticker of its predecessor) so it can be happy but also smirking or angry, if you block its way! According to cofounder and CEO Felipe Chavez Cortes, the company has already fulfilled more than 10,000 orders with its team of delivery ‘bots.

How does Kiwi work?
Once you download the Kiwi mobile App, order food from one of the partner businesses, a truck goes to a dedicated parking lot near the restaurant and releases the robot. The Kiwi robot picks up the food and goes back to the truck, which brings it to the parking spot nearest to the shopper, again releases it and the ‘robot goes to the end user. Kiwi’s robots are autonomous but constantly monitored by a remote crew that operates out of Bogota and sees everything through a smart phone fixed on top the unit, always ready to take control. They’re free to go about their business without handlers or supervisors in the immediate vicinity.
