How many of you throw plastic water bottle in random places inside railway stations? And suppose someone gives you some money in the exchange of this water bottle, then? Laughing??? But it is true.

In an attempt to become more eco-friendly, the Indian Railways has introduced a unique concept where it has installed plastic bottle crushing machines in some stations across the country and for every bottle crushed, passengers will get an instant cashback of Rs. 5 in their Paytm wallets. Just passanger has to do is to enter their Paytm mobile number in the machine after dropping bottle.

Rs. 4.5 lakh has been spent by the railways on each machine which were done in partnership with a private firm. These automated machines are noiseless and will crush the bottles into fine pieces. Divisional Railway Manager (Bengaluru railway division) R S Saxena, who inaugurated the facility at KSR city railway station on the World Environmental Day on Tuesday, said: "We have tied up with a private firm to install automatic noiseless bottle crushing machines in major railway stations of Bengaluru division. We will also increase the number of these machines at the stations based on the response from passengers".

Also he added, “This will also ensure that plastic bottles are not dumped on railway tracks or stations premises. It is also an eco-friendly option to dispose of plastic bottles,” South Western Railway’s Mysuru Railway Station, and the railway stations of Ahmedabad, Pune and Mumbai, already have these bottle crushing machines.

The Indian Railway has started more eco-friendly initiatives on the World Environment Day, such as serving meals to passengers traveling in some premium trains on eco-friendly, disposable plates made of bagasse. Bagasse is the fibrous remains one gets during sugar production.
